  • Brief Introduction:Shumao Xu is a PI at the Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-inspired Intelligence (ISTBI) at Fudan University. He serves as the Guest Editor of special issue on brain-computer interfaces (BCI) for Biomimetics and is an academic editor for Exploration (Wiley). He also holds editorial positions for youth committees in journals such as Scientific Reports, Brain-X and MedMat. His research interest focuses on the development of implantable neural electrodes for brain-computer interfaces, deep brain electrical or magnetic stimulation for neurodegenerative disease treatment, calcium fluorescence imaging for decoding neural dynamics, and non-genetic optoelectronic neural interface modulation. He aims to develop high-precision and high-efficiency neural electrodes that support intelligent monitoring, disease diagnosis, and neural rehabilitation, thereby advancing neural modulation for treating neurodegenerative diseases and neural signal monitoring in human-computer interaction. Dr. Xu received his Ph.D. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and subsequently worked at the Max Planck Institute for Solid-State Research, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of California, Los Angeles. He has hosted projects funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Youth Fund Project), the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation (Innovative Program), and the Shanghai Super Postdoctoral Program. Shumao Xu has received several accolades, including the Best Editorial Board Member and Academic Contribution Award from Exploration (2024) and the Best Presentation Award from Showa Denko International Exchange in Japan (2016). His research interests initially arose from the summer internship involving chemical engineering in the Tokyo University-Showa Denko exchange project (Japan, 2016).
